These recommendations are for general use computers and will suit the needs of most CSUMB students, faculty and staff. Before you order a new computer or bring one from home to use at CSUMB, you should contact your advisor to ensure your major does not require specialized hardware.

A laptop with a wireless card is ideal for campus life. You can access network services from nearly everywhere and take your work with you. If it is your primary computer, you should consider buying a docking station, external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

If you are bringing a computer from home, here are some suggestions:

  • Bring your warranty/support information and all of the CD's that came with your computer to CSUMB.
  • Check with your insurance company to see if your homeowners/renters insurance covers your computer while you are at CSUMB.
  • If bringing a laptop, make sure you have a lock kit.
  • Make sure any computer you bring meets or exceeds these specifications.
  • If you are bringing a two-year old computer to CSUMB, don't expect it to last for four more years.
  • If you are going to live on East Campus (apartments), be sure to get a cable modem.
  • Understand the Operating System Support Levels
