Summer 2008 Building 18 Construction NoticeDuring Summer ‘08, the ventilation system at Building 18 will be improved and upgraded by replacing the majority of existing (failing) equipment. This work includes: - Replacement of the building Air Handling Units mounted on the roof.
- Replacement of 41 Variable Air Volume Control Valves (VAV). The VAV’s are located throughout the building above the suspended ceiling.
- New ductwork will be installed in Rooms 110, 106 and 164.
- New Air Diffusers will be installed in Room 118.
The above listing briefly summarizes the work to be done. We understand that the details may not be important to you. The most important outcome of the project is: When work is completed, the temperature and overall air control of the building should be more stable. And, as an added bonus, the building will be more energy efficient. Anticipated Project Schedule - Work is expected to begin on May 19, right after commencement. Construction will not interfere with CAPSTONES or finals.
- Rooms 106, 110, and 164 will be closed May 19 thru May 30, allowing the Contractor to replace the overhead ducting in a safe manner, and without conflicting with classes. While these rooms are closed, the VAV’s will also be replaced. Once this portion of work is completed, the rooms will be re-opened and available for classes throughout the summer with only minimal disruption.
- Building office occupants will be contacted individually to coordinate the installation of new VAV’s located above office spaces. VAV replacements should require approximately 4-6 hours for completion.
- Preparatory work for replacement of the roof mounted Air Handling Units will occur May 27 thru June 13. First, the failing existing units will be removed. The roof will be reinforced to accept new units. Temporary units will be put into place to continue air flow in the building during construction. When the new, permanent units arrive (approx. the first week in July), they will be lifted into place and installed. Building occupants we will be updated throughout construction.
- During the first week of June, the construction schedule will be reviewed and adjustments made if necessary to improve efficiency.
- All work of this Project is expected to be completed prior to the start of the fall semester.
You should anticipate the following: - Expect noise on the roof at any time throughout the course of construction.
- Expect a number of workmen on ladders inside the building, in the rooms and corridors removing ceiling tiles and installing new VAV’s and ductwork. Expect some noise and some minor inconvenience associated with this work.
