In order to use mobile devices, calendar sync and non-Google email clients with Google Email and Calendar (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Outlook, Google Talk, etc.), you need to understand these three items, then follow the instructions for your specific device/application:
1) Use your full CSUMB Gmail email address as your login/username. In this example it is email@example.com
2) Use your OtterID password (the same one you login to MyCSUMB with)
3) Any time your change your OtterID password, you will need change the password you used when you setup your mobile device or email/calendar application. See the applicable notes below.
If you are setting up a mobile device for the first time, you will need to have changed your OtterID password after October 1, 2011 for this service to work. To change your OtterID password, use the CSUMB Identity Management system.
Our recommendations and support levels for handheld devices is based on their compatibly with Google Email and Calendar. It is important to review this information before purchasing a new device. The iPhone, Android and Blackberry are supported for use with Google Email and Calendar.
We do not provide instruction/training in the basic use of these devices. Please consult your product documentation for information on using your device.
iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc.)
Note: These setup instructions are for Apple devices running software version 4.0 or newer.
To configure the 'Mail' app on an Apple device for access to Gmail and Calendar, just follow these steps:
- Make sure you've enabled IMAP in your main Gmail settings
- Open the Settings app on your device
- Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Tap Add Account...
- Tap Gmail
- Enter your account information, being sure to use your full Google Apps email address, including '@csumb.edu'
- Tap Next
- Tap Save
You can select which services you want to sync (email, calendar, notes) during the setup process.
iOS password change: When you change your OtterID password, you will need to change the password used by Google on your iOS device.
- Go to Settings> Mail, Contacts, Calendars> Accounts>
- Select the CSUMB account you created and click Account
- Enter your new password
On your Android device, go to Settings> Accounts> Add Accounts> Google and Sign In. You can select which services you want to sync (email, calendar, contacts) during the setup process. More info is available on the Google Android Accounts page. Remember to use your CSUMB email address as your login/username.
Android password change: When you change your OtterID password, you will need to change the password used by Google on your Android device. Since the Android account does not have a change password feature, restart your phone and you will be prompted for the new password. It can take several minutes before you are prompted for your new password. If you don't restart your device, you will eventually be prompted to re-enter your password.
To use a Blackberry with Google Email and Calendar email and calendar, visit the Google Blackberry page for info on the Gmail app on Blackberry (email) and Google Sync for Blackberry (calendar and contacts). Remember to use your CSUMB email address as your login/username.
Blackberry password change: When you change your OtterID password, you will need to change the password used by Gmail and Google Sync on the Blackberry. In order to do this, you will need to sign-out and then back in to Gmail and Google Sync with your new password.
Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook
Google Apps Sync is a plug-in for Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 that lets you use Outlook to manage your Google Apps mail, calendar, and contacts—along with your Outlook notes, tasks, and journal entries. Google Apps Sync seamlessly syncs mail, calendar events, contacts, and notes between your Google profile in Outlook and your Google Apps account in the cloud, so you can access the same information at any time from either interface.

Accessing Gmail on 3rd part clients (IMAP, POP)

The Google Talk web client is part of the standard Gmail experience, but Google also supports stand-alone chat clients.
iChat: Go to iChat menu -> preferences -> click accounts at top of window, click the plus at the bottom of this window, under the account type pop up choose GoogleTalk. Google Account is your CSUMB email address.
Adium: Go to Adium menu -> preferences -> on first pane is accounts, click the plus at the bottom left, choose Google Talk. Your GTalk ID is your CSUMB email address.
Google Talk: Your Username is your CSUMB email address.
Pidgin: Go to the Accounts menu and click Add. Under the Basic tab, the Protocol is XMPP, Username is the part of your CSUMB email address before the @ symbol (jotter, not firstname.lastname@example.org), and the Domain is csumb.edu. Under the Advanced tab, make sure the Connect server is talk.google.com
